Artist's
Notes for Falling Towers
Sept. 18, 2001
A true Fractal Image, produced with Fractal Explorer Version 1.19.
Orientation was changed with Compupic, a graphics program.
I debated with myself whether to put this image in the gallery. I
thought it might somehow be insensitive and not appropriate. After some
comments received from the fractal image newsgroup I realized that art
can be part of the healing process, especially for the artist.
The image is dominated by the two large variegated rectangles, one erect
and one on its side in the foreground. The basic shape of the rectangles
can be recognized as very similar to the Twin Towers. This shape is
echoed throughout the image, in various states of overlap and
interaction.
The randomly spaced smaller shapes impart a sense of chaos and
movement.
The coloring aids greatly in pulling the composition together. The
pinkish blocks of color connect the upper with the lower part of the
image, and serve to offset the large white Tower block, sending this
most dominate shape to the background. The black void on the upper right
of the image gives dimension to the large white Tower and is balanced
with another black block in the lower left of the image. Against both of
these black blocks are outlined the random smaller shapes, helping to
place these elements into a sort of weightlessness, while giving the
collection of small shapes a generally downward direction.
The large pink triangle color block comes into the image at the upper
left and penetrates to the center of the image. This angularity is also
repeated in several areas of the image, as only a fractal can do. This
shape also appears on the lower Tower, almost as a shadow of the larger
triangle. These angular blocks also create the conflict in the image,
contrasting with the rectangles.
This large pink triangle color block can also be seen as a highly
abstracted jet nose cone. One can imagine that a pilot sits in the
cockpit, bracing for impact.
Let us heal together.
